Once the beginning fireball salvo is over get under ol' dragon breath and fire a missile once every 3-4 seconds. It's a large and complex world but doesn't lack of content and variety which is the pitfall most large hacks fall into. If you enjoyed playing the game, give it a thumbs up. But there are always those who seek to cause chaos and destruction in any way they can. Once the Pirates discovered the immense power of these beings, they became obsessed with manufacturing a Metroid army to dominate the galaxy. A recurring theme is that Zebes is so hostile that the environment is hostile to everything in it, not just Samus. Proper save stations and refill stations scattered nicely on the map requires no further explanation, shooting where you want to means flying enemies don't annoy the shit out of you anymore, you have your own map and locations with similar geometry still make sure you don't confuse them in your head, bosses, despite being a step down compared to Fusion, actually provide a boss fight instead of being a sponge barrier. Using the advanced technology in her custom Power Suit, Samus also hopes to live up to the legacy left to her by the ancient bird-like Chozo race. It plays mostly like Super Metroid, but there's Zero-Mission-based physics changes as well such as being able to restart a spin while falling, and shinespark chaining.
As the game went on, I also started peeking at maps that people had posted, which were helpful for parts that I couldn't figure out. You can play the most up-to-date standard version of the hack or you can play the special Hard Edition if you want more challenge. Those with less patience of the eccentricities of 80s action games can probably just play Zero Mission, but others can still experience the harsh difficulty of the older games, but then revisit them with remodeled graphics and extra elements in the remake. But the amount of secrets, shortcuts, different paths to certain locations, and the intricate puzzle created by the level design kept me intrigued, and a bit frustrated, for most of the time I played it. Collect more powerups and suit upgrades and battle re-imagined bosses and locations in this awesome platform shooting game! Then again, back in the day I had the big book of maps and hints that Nintendo put out, so it took the place of an in game map for me.
Still, the long answer is that it's just hard to say, Zero Mission challenges you to learn something while Metroid, which sadly didn't age well, challenges you to get used to something. While aspects like this are definitely missed, Zero Mission introduces other aspects to make up for it. While I enjoyed the hack for a while, I never came to complete it. Plus, if you thought that the original Metroid had a surprise ending, wait until you get past the Mother Brain in Metroid: Zero Mission. It has raised the bar in almost every way possible.
Some of the items are placed in roughly the same area, but others have been placed in less hidden areas, like the Ice Beam. Certain Chozo statues will point you towards your next goal, but it works like it does in Metroid Prime, where it just points at a general location, which is often in unmapped territories.
